Gylfi Sigurdsson 'out for rest of season, World Cup participation in doubt'

Gylfi Sigurdsson is reportedly facing a race against time to be fit for Iceland's World Cup campaign after injuring his knee in Everton's win over Brighton.

Everton and Iceland midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson will reportedly miss the remainder of the season through injury and is a major fitness doubt for the World Cup finals.

The 28-year-old is due to see a specialist on Monday afternoon to learn the full extent of the damage sustained to his knee in the Toffees' 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.

According to The Sun, ligament damage is a real possibility and the former Swansea City ace therefore faces a few months on the sidelines, making him doubtful for Iceland's historic campaign in Russia this summer.

Sigurdsson, who managed to finish the game against Brighton on Saturday despite the injury, will know by the end of the week whether surgery is required.

Iceland's first World Cup game is against Argentina on June 16, before facing Nigeria and Croatia over the following 10 days.
