England vs. Montenegro: Previous meetings

Ahead of Friday's Wembley clash, Sports Mole reviews the three previous meetings between England and Montenegro.

England will play host to Montenegro on Friday with both sides in contention to qualify automatically for next year's World Cup in Brazil.

Although there have not been many previous encounters between the two nations, they have met fairly regularly in recent years.

Below, Sports Mole has looked back over the three fixtures, none of which have produced a winner.

England 0-0 Montenegro, October 2010

While Kevin Davies will remember this match forever, there are some England supporters who are bound to have forgotten it already. The former Bolton Wanderers frontman was handed his international debut by Fabio Capello, but his presence was unable to inspire the Three Lions to victory. Gareth Barry and Wayne Rooney saw shots saved by Montenegro goalkeeper Mladen Bozovic in the closing stages, while in the 83rd minute Milan Jovanovic struck the crossbar for the visitors. Both sides had gone into the Wembley contest with 100% records.

Montenegro 2-2 England, October 2011

Capello's side got the point that they needed to book their place at the 2012 European Championships as group winners, but the result was overshadowed by not only the fact that they had surrendered a two-goal lead, but Rooney was also red-carded, meaning that he would miss the start of the tournament. Ashley Young and Darren Bent scored within the opening 31 minutes as England threatened to run riot, but the arrears were reduced on the stroke of half time by Elsad Zverotic. Then, shortly after the restart, the red mist descended over Rooney, who inexplicably booted Miodrag Dzudovic up the backside. It appeared that the away side were going to hold on despite their numerical disadvantage, but in stoppage time Andrija Delibasic headed in an equaliser.

Montenegro 1-1 England, March 2013

Manchester United frontman Rooney won't have had fond memories of his last outing in Podgorica, but he fared much better 18 months later. The 27-year-old showed great invention early on when he attempted to chip Bozovic from the edge of the area in the opening exchanges, only to see the ball cannon to safety off the upright. However, he was more accurate with six minutes on the clock when he headed in Steven Gerrard's corner. Roy Hodgson's team failed to press home their advantage, though, and with 14 minutes left, substitute Dejan Damjanovic bundled in an equaliser to ensure that the spoils are shared. It meant that Montenegro remained top of the qualifying group, two points ahead of England.
