Prime Minister David Cameron says that "tough sanctions" must be issued by UEFA following the racial abuse targeted at members of the England Under-21 side in Serbia.

Prime Minister David Cameron has claimed that he is "appalled" by the scenes that played out at the end of England Under-21s' victory over Serbia last night.

English full-back Danny Rose was subjected to monkey chants during his side's 1-0 win over Serbia, which secured Stuart Pearce's team a spot in the Euro 2013 finals.

Cameron has called on UEFA to take "tough sanctions" against the Serbian national side, while Sports Minister Hugh Robertson has written to the president of the European governing body, Michel Platini.

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has also urged UEFA to take strong action following the unsavoury scenes in Eastern Europe.
