Report: Wayne Rooney to be named England captain next week

England manager Roy Hodgson will reportedly name Manchester United star Wayne Rooney as the nation's new captain.

England manager Roy Hodgson will reportedly name Wayne Rooney as the new Three Lions skipper next Thursday.

The Manchester United striker has been heavily tipped to take the armband following Steven Gerrard's decision to retire from international duty after the World Cup in Brazil.

According to The Express, Hodgson will confirm Rooney's appointment next week and the FA are hopeful that the news will boost ticket sales for the September 3 friendly against Norway at Wembley.

The 28-year-old, who was part of England's failed World Cup campaign in South America earlier this summer, was recently named as United's new skipper by manager Louis van Gaal.

As of last night, 15,000 tickets for England's match against Norway had been sold following the Three Lions' failure to progress past the group stages in Brazil.
