Gary Neville: 'Scotland fans will not make a difference'

Gary Neville says that a partisan crowd will not help Scotland beat England, insisting that the clash will be decided by what happens on the field rather than in the stands.

England coach Gary Neville has played down the importance of Scotland's partisan crowd ahead of Tuesday's friendly at Celtic Park.

Tomorrow's clash in Glasgow is widely expected to be a friendly in name only as Roy Hodgson's Three Lions side gear up for a feisty affair.

The build-up to the encounter has been dominated by the notion that the hosts' fans will act as a 12th man, but Neville says that the outcome will ultimately be determined by ability.

"You can get carried away going on about the atmosphere. I've played against Celtic there and know exactly what it can be like," the ex-Manchester United defender told The Mirror.

"But the atmosphere won't win a football match. It will be down to the ability of the players on the night."

Scotland have not beaten their UK rivals since 1985, and Hodgson's men emerged victorious the last time both teams faced off - a 3-2 win at Wembley in August, 2013.
