England boss Roy Hodgson impressed by Jamie Vardy's "pace and desire"

Roy Hodgson reveals that he included Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy in his latest England squad because he is impressed by the player's "pace and desire".

England manager Roy Hodgson has revealed that the "pace and desire" shown by Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy are the reasons behind his first senior call-up.

The 28-year-old is one of three uncapped players that have been included in the Three Lions' latest 24-man squad.

Queens Park Rangers forward Charlie Austin and Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton have also been called up to the senior international side for the first time.

"I had watched him at Fleetwood and know he had the pace and desire to run in behind players, which is always an interesting quality for coaches and have seen his performances in the latter part of the season with Leicester," Hodgson said in this afternoon's press conference.

"He is another player, alongside Austin, that will be nice to get to know him better."

Next month, England will take on the Republic of Ireland in a friendly and Slovenia in a Euro 2016 qualifier.
