England boss Roy Hodgson has praised Adam Lallana and Raheem Sterling after calling up the duo to his squad for Tuesday's clash with Ukraine.

Hodgson has also quelled fears that the illnesses suffered by Daniel Sturridge and Theo Walcott have spread throughout the squad.

"It's good when you have a chance to invite these young players to be a part of the squad," Hodgson told reporters.

"Their early performances for Southampton and Liverpool have been impressive. I have known about Adam for some time now... Raheem in the last two years has come on leaps and bounds."

When questioned whether there is a fear that there is a virus in the camp, he added: "We hope not. We have kept Daniel Sturridge away from the other players."

Hodgson also confirmed that one of Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka will take the place of injured defender John Terry.

"They are both good players, whichever player I choose, I will be happy that the team is well covered."

England began their World Cup qualification campaign with a 5-0 win over Moldova on Friday.
