Match Analysis: Doncaster Rovers 1-0 Leicester City

Sports Mole pores over a surprise win for Doncaster Rovers over Leicester City that all came down to a clanger.

Kasper Schmeichel's goalkeeping clanger handed Doncaster Rovers their first home win since mid-August as Leicester City's journey towards the top of the table hit a roadblock.

Despite being under no pressure, Danish keeper Schmeichel fumbled Mark Duffy's inswinging corner into his own net in what was the only goal of the game at the Keepmoat.

Below, Sports Mole picks the bones out of a hard-fought three points for Paul Dickov's side.

Match statistics:

Leicester:

Possession 51%

Fouls 6

Was the result fair?

Just about, yes. A draw would have probably been the fairest result but you have to applaud Doncaster's resilience all afternoon. Leicester even admitted on their Twitter feed towards the end of the match that the Foxes were "struggling" to break down the hosts.

Donny's performance

All eyes were on Federico Macheda to continue his run of a goal a game since joining Rovers. He looked lively at times but did not impress too much. The midfield trio of Dean Furman, Mark Duffy and Paul Keegan were assured while the backline looked strong against the likes of David Nugent and Anthony Knockaert. Ross Turnbull made a couple of important saves that ensured that Leicester were shut out.

Leicester's performance

Nigel Pearson's side went into the match on a run of six wins from seven but never really turned up. Their best spell came in the final 15 minutes of the first half when Turnbull was tested and Danny Drinkwater saw an accurate finish unluckily come back out off the inside of the post. An improved second half was expected but it never really came from Leicester, who have now dropped three points behind the table-topping duo of Burnley and Queens Park Rangers.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Rob Jones: There wasn't a single player who stood out today but Donny's defensive display was the highlight and Jones was the biggest presence as Leicester's in-form attack was nullified.

Biggest gaffe

Maybe Schmeichel's 'howler of the season' so far?! The son of Manchester United great Peter will be on the Christmas blooper DVDs/Blu-Rays for many a year!

Referee performance

Mark Heywood had little to do all afternoon, not issuing a yellow card until the 87th minute when a frustrated David Nugent talked back too much.

What next?

Donny: An international two-week break is next and when domestic action returns Donny travel to Reading.

Leicester: The Foxes, meanwhile, host Huddersfield Town on Saturday, October 19.
