West Bromwich Albion have allegedly entered the race to sign DC United forward Wayne Rooney.
Reports emerged on Monday night that the former Manchester United and England player was on the verge of joining Derby County in a player-coach role.
Rams owner Mel Morris has since confirmed that discussions are currently taking place with the 33-year-old, although it appears that the East Midlands outfit face late competition for the veteran's signature.
According to the Daily Mail, West Brom are interested in offering Rooney a similar position at The Hawthorns as they look to strengthen in the final third.
The report adds that while Derby remain strong favourites to finalise a deal on Tuesday, the Baggies have made contact with Rooney's representatives.
Rooney has contributed 25 goals from 45 appearances for DC United since joining the MLS side last year.
