Preview: Derby County vs. Charlton Athletic

Sports Mole previews this weekend's Championship clash between Derby County and Charlton Athletic.

Derby County will hope to secure their first win of the season when they host high-flying Charlton Athletic on Saturday afternoon.

The Londoners have enjoyed a fine start to the new campaign and will travel to Derby with plenty of confidence as they aim to stretch their winning run.

Derby have not enjoyed the start of the season that they would have expected, and remain winless from two games.

On the opening day of the campaign last week, they hung on to a 0-0 draw at Bolton Wanderers, a team that finished 10 places below them last season.

New head coach Paul Clement made some surprising team selections in that game, including Chris Baird at right-back, but they also suffered a double injury blow.

Craig Bryson is likely to miss a month with a muscle problem, while the talented Will Hughes is expected to miss the majority of the season with a serious knee injury.

Last night's defeat to Portsmouth in the first round of the League Cup will have been difficult to swallow, and Clement could be under immediate pressure if they don't claim three points on Saturday.

The manager has already called for his side's commitment and will demand a response against Charlton.

The Englishman is a well-respected coach, but this is his first managerial position and he is expected to lead Derby into the Premier League.

Charlton produced one of the results of the opening weekend when they stunned Queens Park Rangers with a 2-0 win at The Valley.

Goals from substitute striker Tony Watt and left-back Morgan Fox handed the Addicks victory, and they will hope to cement their good start with a win in their first away game of the season.

In midweek, Guy Luzon's men thrashed League Two team Dagenham & Redbridge 4-1 in the League Cup, with Watt again helping himself to a goal.

Luzon has admitted that he would like to sign a new goalkeeper in time for the game, as regular No.1 Stephen Henderson is currently missing with an injury.

They are also chasing a new winger, but Luzon claimed that it is unlikely they will sign Wolverhampton Wanderers' James Henry.

After their trip to Derby, Charlton will face Nottingham Forest away from home on Tuesday, before they welcome Hull City next weekend.

Team News

Derby boss Clement could make a number of changes following an unsatisfactory start to the season, which could result in a recall for new striker Darren Bent.

George Thorne is likely to keep his place in midfield while Will Hughes is out, while Craig Forsyth and Andreas Weimann are pushing for starts.

Charlton are expected to name the in-form Tony Watt in their starting XI after his goals in both of the first two games.

New striker Simon Makienok is likely to miss out, leaving Watt alongside Igor Vetokele.

Derby County possible starting lineup:
Grant; Forsyth, Pearce, Baird, Shotton; Hendrick, Keogh; Ince, Thorne, Weimann; Bent.

Charlton Athletic possible starting lineup:
Pope; Solly, Diarra, Bauer, Fox; Kashi, Ba, Cousins; Ahearne-Grant, Watt, Vetokele.

Head To Head

The sides will meet for the 74th time on Saturday, and Derby have a better record having claimed 35 wins and lost just 29 times.

Charlton won 2-0 in the first clash in 1936, but have only won once in the last nine meetings, stretching back to 2002.

Last season, Derby won both games and kept two clean sheets although they failed to go on and earn promotion.

We say: Derby County 2-1 Charlton Athletic

Derby may have had a shaky start, but they have plenty of quality in their squad and should get back on track quickly.

Charlton have enjoyed the opening week of the season, but questions remain over the quality of their squad. The Rams have a point to prove, and should come away with their first victory of the season.
