Roy Hodgson: 'Missing late penalty brings an element of sadness'

Roy Hodgson admits that Crystal Palace's late penalty miss in the 0-0 draw against Manchester City had "an element of sadness to it" despite being proud of the result.

Roy Hodgson has admitted that Crystal Palace's late penalty miss against Manchester City had "an element of sadness to it".

The Eagles ended City's record-breaking Premier League winning run on Sunday thanks to a hard-earned goalless draw at Selhurst Park.

Palace could have potentially clinched all three points after Jon Moss awarded the hosts an injury-time penalty following Raheem Sterling's foul on Wilfried Zaha in the box.

However, City goalkeeper Ederson saved Luka Milivojevic's spot kick to ensure a share of the spoils in South London.

Hodgson also bemoaned the glut of festive fixtures as Palace lost both Jason Puncheon and Scott Dann to injury, while City stars Gabriel Jesus and Kevin De Bruyne also suffered significant knocks.

"I was very proud of the performance," Hodgson told reporters. "We know how to play against a team with Man City's quality and organisation, but our discipline was very good and we tried to make the best of the attacking opportunities and there were chances throughout the course of the game.

"It was an excellent point and before the game we would have been jumping through hoops with a point, but when you get a penalty late in the game and you miss like we have before there is an element of sadness.

"There is now one day rest between games and has cost us two players and them two players as well. And we have both paid a high price for the point and it will be an effort to get back to this level of this performance."

The result ensures that Palace remain 17th in the Premier League table, one point above the bottom three.
