Chelsea Pochettino compensation dependent on next job?

The next destination of Mauricio Pochettino will reportedly determine whether Chelsea are owed any compensation for the Argentine.

Chelsea will reportedly hope that Mauricio Pochettino does not become the next manager of England or USA.

Two days after the end of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign, Pochettino and club officials at Stamford Bridge mutually decided to go their separate ways.

That is despite the Argentine guiding Chelsea to five successive wins, which proved pivotal as the West Londoners earned a sixth-placed finish in the standings.

As a result, Pochettino's stock was arguably enhanced prior to him becoming available on the market, and he is currently biding his time regarding his next destination.

Potential roles at Manchester United and Bayern Munich did not go his way, yet speculation persists that he is on the radar of football associations wanting a new national team boss.

England, USA need new managers

Gareth Southgate has resigned from his position as England manager on the back of the Three Lions reaching the Euro 2024 final, where they lost to Spain on Sunday night.

Meanwhile, USA require a replacement for Gregg Berhalter after he was sacked in the aftermath of their dismal Copa America campaign.

According to The Telegraph, the respective football associations in those countries have a free run should they wish to appoint Pochettino as their new boss.

The report claims that, as part of his exit from Chelsea, it was agreed that compensation would not be due should an opportunity with a national team arise.

Although Pochettino is not believed to be first choice for either position, the 52-year-old is in the running, particularly with Jurgen Klopp having already turned down a role with USA.

Different clause in place for Premier League clubs

From Chelsea's perspective, they would perhaps prefer for a Premier League club to express an interest in Pochettino as soon as possible.

They would allegedly be due in the region of £5m should a "top six" club look to appoint Pochettino as their new manager.

As it stands, that appears highly unlikely. Man United had been deemed the only realistic possibility earlier in the summer before Erik ten Hag penned a new contract.

Newcastle United could theoretically make a move for Pochettino if Eddie Howe becomes England manager, yet it is unclear whether they would have to pay anything to Chelsea.
