Chelsea captain John Terry has sparked controversy by refusing to shake hands with Football Association chairman David Bernstein.

The 32-year-old was in attendance at an event in London today to hand back the Champions League trophy following last season's triumph over Bayern Munich on penalties.

Terry, who retired from international football earlier this season, revealed that his snub was related to last year's racism case, in which the centre-back served a suspension with regards to unacceptable language directed at Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand.

"It's a difficult one for me," Terry told Sky Sports News. "I don't want to talk on air, it's probably a subject we should just avoid."

When Bernstein was asked what his relationship with Terry was like, he replied: "A little distant. I'm not terribly concerned, I've got other things to think about, I have other priorities."

Terry is preparing with his Chelsea teammates for a trip to Anfield to face Liverpool this Sunday.
