Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge: 'Chelsea didn't believe in me as a striker'

Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge says that Chelsea 'never believed' in him as a striker, which prompted his move to Anfield in January 2013.

Liverpool star Daniel Sturridge has hit out at Chelsea by claiming that they 'never believed' in his ability as a striker.

The 24-year-old moved to Anfield from Stamford Bridge, where he spent the majority of playing time as a winger, in the January transfer window of last year.

Since then, the England international has gone on to find the back of the net 28 times in 35 games.

"I was never sure if I'd play as a striker [at Chelsea] because people didn't believe in me," Sturridge told the Anfield Wrap.

"I was often asked to play in a different position and to do a job for the team but, having been a striker and then being asked to just flick a switch and play on the wing was always going to be difficult, because mentally you're going to play the way you always have and I play on instinct."

Sturridge netted his 17th goal in 19 appearances this season during the Reds' 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Sunday.
