Steven Gerrard could be ruled out for Liverpool's tough upcoming fixtures against Manchester City and Chelsea.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard could miss the Reds' double fixture against Chelsea as well as their trip to the Etihad Stadium to face Premier League leaders Manchester City.

The 31-year-old was forced to miss England's friendlies against Spain and Sweden with an ankle infection.

While Liverpool have yet to announce the return of the Reds skipper, fears are growing that Gerrard could be ruled out for the next three matches, according to the Daily Star.

Kenny Dalglish's side face Chelsea this Sunday in the Premier League with a tough encounter against Man City due the following weekend.

Days later the Merseysiders return to Stamford Bridge for a Carling Cup quarter-final clash against Andre Villas-Boas's team.

Meanwhile, defender Jamie Carragher could return to action against the Blues this weekend after overcoming a calf injury.
