A takeover of Chelsea is reportedly not guaranteed to go through as planned with an agreement over the destination of the generated funds yet to be agreed.

The government reportedly has concerns that the takeover of Chelsea will not go through as planned and before the necessary deadlines.

Earlier this month, Chelsea confirmed that a consortium led by Todd Boehly were ready to purchase the Premier League club from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, with the remainder of the process deemed a relative formality.

However, according to BBC Sport, that may not be the case with Abramovich yet to agree to the government having control of the proceeds.

A recent Chelsea statement indicated that the funds would go towards charities linked to the victims of Russia's war on Ukraine, also disputing reports that Abramovich wanted to be repaid the £1.6bn that he had loaned Chelsea during his 19-year reign.

Nevertheless, the report says that ministers have fears that the takeover will "fall apart" and not be completed before the deadline of May 31.

Chelsea's special government licence expires on that date, while the Blues must also fulfil certain criteria in order to remain as members of the Premier League.

There is also the risk of Chelsea going into administration if Boehly does not take over within the next few weeks.
