Chelsea "appalled" by Nemanja Matic decision

Chelsea condemn the FA's decision to only reduce Nemanja Matic's ban by one game.

Chelsea have hit out at the Football Association's decision to only reduce Nemanja Matic's ban to two matches.

The FA confirmed on Tuesday that the midfielder would not serve the standard three-game suspension for his red card against Burnley following an appeal by the club.

Matic was sent off against the Clarets on Saturday after reacting aggressively to a tackle from Ashley Barnes.

However, Chelsea believe that the Serbian's reaction was justified after what they claim was a "career-threatening" challenge by Barnes.

"There has been universal condemnation of the reckless challenge made by Ashley Barnes on Matic and it is the club's view that he has been unjustly punished with a two-match ban for his reaction to a career-threatening tackle," read an official Chelsea statement.

"It is Chelsea's opinion that referees and the football authorities must do more to protect players at all levels of the game from dangerous challenges. This decision also clearly demonstrates a need for consistency and fairness in the disciplinary process."

Chelsea have revealed that they are awaiting the FA's written reasons for the decision before making any further comment.
