Chelsea accuse Fiorentina of attempting to "extort" money from them by claiming for a huge compensation fee over the sale of Mohamed Salah.

Fiorentina have been accused by Chelsea of trying to "extort" money over the sale of former player Mohamed Salah.

The Egypt international, who spent two frustrating years at Stamford Bridge before leaving in 2016, completed a near club-record switch to Liverpool last week.

Salah spent time on loan at Fiorentina before moving to Roma on a permanent deal, and La Viola felt that the winger had breached his contract by joining their Serie A rivals.

Both Chelsea and Salah were cleared of any wrongdoing by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, denying Fiorentina a share of £27m in compensation, but the matter does not appear to have come to an end just yet.

A Blues spokesman is quoted by the London Evening Standard as saying: "Chelsea's position throughout this case was that Fiorentina had acted in bad faith in bringing a claim which was totally unfounded.

"We are pleased that the CAS panel came to the same conclusion, with Fiorentina's case rejected in full and costs awarded to Chelsea and the player.

"We look forward to the full decision being published so that everyone can see the lengths that Fiorentina were prepared to go to in order to extort large sums of money from Chelsea and the player."

Salah scored 15 times and registered 11 assists in 31 Serie A appearances during the 2016-17 campaign, having struggled to break into Chelsea's first team during his previous stint in English football.
