Gianfranco Zola sacked by Cagliari after less than three months in charge

Former West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola is sacked as Cagliari boss after just 10 league games in charge of the struggling Serie A side.

Former West Ham United manager Gianfranco Zola has lost his job as Cagliari boss after just 10 league games in charge of the Serie A side.

Zola won just two games at the helm of the Sardinian side and lost five of the last six, with Cagliari four points from safety in 18th place.

"Cagliari announce that Gianfranco Zola and his staff have been relieved of the technical leadership of the first team," read a club statement.

"It was a decision which was taken reluctantly against a great man who has written unforgettable pages in the history of Cagliari, bringing brilliance and giving international prestige to the land of Sardinia."

Zola ended his playing career with Cagliari between 2003 and 2005 after leaving Chelsea, scoring 22 league goals in two seasons for the Italian outfit.

His post in Sardinia was his third job in club management after spells at West Ham and Watford.
