Everton go ninth with vital win over Burnley

Samuel Eto'o scores twice as Everton record a 3-1 win over Burnley in their Premier League clash at Turf Moor.

It took just three minutes for the visitors to take the lead, with experienced forward Samuel Eto'o heading a Leighton Baines cross into the back of the net via the crossbar.

It was no more than Everton's early play deserved, with Roberto Martinez's side controlling the opening 10 minutes of action.

Danny Ings had a half-chance for the home side after 11 minutes, but his low effort was wide of the post.

Burnley were level after 20 minutes, however, when Ings collected a through-pass from Lukas Jutkiewicz before rounding Tim Howard and finishing into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.

Everton were back ahead just before the 30-minute mark when Romelu Lukaku bundled home from inside the Burnley box.

Jutkiewicz came close to levelling for the home side less than five minutes later, but the striker fired wide of the post after breaking into the away side's penalty box.

Everton might have had a third late in the half, but Steven Naismith's header rattled the crossbar.

Jutkiewicz had the chance to level for Burnley minutes into the second period, but the striker could only head straight at Howard after a mix-up inside the Everton box.

Everton controlled developments as the clock approached the hour mark, but both sides were struggling to create clear openings, with a low effort from Eto'o just about the best that either team could muster.

Naismith had another half-chance for Everton after 72 minutes, but his low effort was pushed wide by Tom Heaton. Five minutes later, Leon Osman fired just high of the Burnley crossbar.

The home side's best chance in the latter stages fell to Scott Arfield, but his low effort moved wide of the post.

Everton made sure of the points five minutes from time when Eto'o bent an effort into the top corner for his second of the match, and could have completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, but rattled the post after rounding Heaton.

Burnley are still without a Premier League win this season and remain in the relegation zone.
