West Ham United edge out winless Burnley

Goals from Diafra Sakho, Enner Valencia and Carlton Cole fire West Ham United to a 3-1 victory over winless Burnley in their Premier League clash.

West Ham United continued their good start to the season with a 3-1 victory over winless Burnley at Turf Moor in their Premier League clash.

The home side started the game well and came within inches of taking the lead in the fifth minute, when George Boyd fired a volley from the edge of the area that cannoned off the crossbar and went over.

Burnley thought they had taken the lead as Danny Ings released the run of Lukas Jutkiewicz through the middle and the striker slotted the ball past Adrian, only to see his effort chalked off for offside.

The Clarets were dominating the game and threatened again when Boyd and Kieran Trippier combined down the right to tee up Jutkiewicz in the middle, but the striker guided his header just over the bar.

Diafra Sakho should have headed the Hammers into the lead when he latched on to Aaron Cresswell's cross from the left flank, but he could only head his effort wide of the target.

The visitors continued to press and went even closer when Stewart Downing cut in from the right, but he saw his left-footed effort clatter off the post and bounce clear.

In the second half, the Hammers upped the ante and took the lead in the 49th minute when Cresswell lifted another cross into the box. This time Sakho made no mistake heading past Tom Heaton as he notched his sixth goal in as many games for Sam Allardyce's side.

West Ham doubled their advantage minutes later as Carl Jenkinson raided down the right and fired a cross into the box, which was converted with precision by Valencia from close range.

Burnley brought themselves back into the game when they capitalised on an error by Adrian as he came for a corner and lost the ball. The loose ball fell to Boyd and he smashed his effort into the net for his side's first strike since the first match of the season.

However, the Hammers restored their two-goal advantage when Sakho nodded Mark Noble's cross into the path of Cole in the six-yard box, and the striker found the net with ease.

Sean Dyche's side came close to setting up a tense finale when Ashley Barnes fired an effort from distance, but his shot crashed off the bar, as the Hammers held out for the victory.
