Burnley have been relegated from the Premier League following their 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle United on Sunday.
Mike Jackson's side only needed to equal or better Leeds United's result at Brentford on the final day, but a 2-1 victory for Jesse Marsch's team sees the Clarets drop to the Championship.
Proceedings started off poorly for Burnley at Turf Moor, with Callum Wilson providing the Magpies with an early lead from the penalty spot just 20 minutes into the encounter.
Following a lacklustre first-half display, Jackson turned to January arrival Wout Weghorst from the bench at the interval, but Wilson netted his, and Newcastle's, second of the game to leave Burnley with a mountain to climb on the hour mark.
With Leeds leading 1-0 at Brentford at the time, the Clarets' fate looked to have been sealed, but a thunderous effort from Maxwel Cornet halved the deficit at Turf Moor, before Sergi Canos hauled the Bees level at the Brentford Community Stadium to set up a potentially-dramatic finish.
Despite some late pressure and numerous opportunities to nick a decisive equaliser, Jackson's men could not haul themselves level though, whilst a stoppage-time goal from Raphinha for Leeds sealed Burnley's heartbreaking relegation to the second tier.
As a result, the Lancashire side's five-year stay in the top flight comes to an end, with the club on the lookout for a new permanent boss in the summer ahead of a targeted immediate return to the Premier League at the first time of asking in the 2022-23 campaign.
