The visitors missed a decent chance to even things up on 22 minutes when Chris O'Grady headed straight into the hands of Alex Smithies.
Danny Holla's speculative effort sailed wide of Smithies's goal just after the half-hour mark, before Lewis Dunk levelled things up shortly after.
The 22-year-old reacted quickest from Brighton's corner to smash an effort into the net and grab his fifth goal of the season.
Scanell almost gave his side the lead towards the end of the half but his effort flew just wide of David Stockdale's post.
After the break, ex-Liverpool youngsters Conor Coady and Jack Robinson combined and the latter fired in an effort, before Grant Holt saw a shot saved on the hour mark.
Harry Bunn was next to try his luck for Huddersfield, but his effort was saved by Stockdale, before Kazenga LuaLua had an attempt that was blocked for the Seagulls.
Smithies denied Adrian Colunga late on, moments after Brighton had a goal ruled out for offside.
The goalkeeper was at it again as the game lurched towards stoppage time, and it was Colunga who was denied once more as Smithies tipped his well-struck effort onto the bar.
LuaLua was then given his marching orders for a second bookable offence in stoppage time.
