FIFA president Sepp Blatter promises a "wonderful" World Cup next year despite ongoing protests in host nation Brazil.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter has promised that next year's World Cup will be "wonderful" despite ongoing protests in host nation Brazil.

The recent Confederations Cup tournament was marred by protests against a number of issues, including the cost of the World Cup to the public.

There were more violent clashes outside the Maracana Stadium last night, but Blatter believes that the unrest is beginning to calm down and that next year's tournament will be a success.

"Thanks to all those who have helped to make this competition such a success, despite the unrest and protests," Blatter said at a press conference.

"I am happy to come to the conclusion now, with the sporting results and also - with at least the impression that - the social unrest is now resting. I don't know how long but it is now resting.

"I am sure that we will have a wonderful World Cup next year. When you have the World Cup and the Olympic Games you can never make everybody happy. We tried to make everyone happy."

Hosts Brazil won the Confederations Cup courtesy of a 3-0 win over reigning world champions Spain on Sunday.
