Borussia Dortmund resurgence continues with Stuttgart victory

Dortmund secure a third straight Bundesliga victory by beating Stuttgart 3-2 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Borussia Dortmund registered their third successive Bundesliga victory tonight after beating Stuttgart 3-2 at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Die Borussen's mid-season resurgence continued as goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ilkay Gundogan, either side of Florian Klein's brief equaliser, helped them into a 2-1 half-time lead.

Marco Reus added a killer third goal in the dying stages, while Georg Niedermeier grabbed a late consolation but the visitors held on to further quell fears of relegation.

Jurgen Klopp's side, who sat bottom of the table at the beginning of February, now sit 10th in the standings - four points clear of the relegation playoff place.

Despite a last-16 Champions League trip to Juventus looming large, Klopp vowed to field his "full orchestra" as Dortmund looked to further distance themselves from the danger zone.

Consequently, they looked on song in the early stages as Sven Ulreich saved well from Kevin Kampl and Nuri Sahin inside 12 minutes.

The visitors thought that they had seen their perseverance rewarded on 14 minutes when Aubameyang tapped home, only for his goal to be chalked off for offside.

The Gabon international did score legitimately on 25 minutes, however, as he latched on to Shinji Kagawa's mis-hit pass before slamming the ball past Ulreich from 12 yards.

Dortmund's lead only lasted seven minutes, though, as Klein stroked home a penalty shortly after the half-hour mark when Sahin was penalised for a foul on Georg Niedermeier.

However, Huub Stevens's side failed to earn a half-time draw as Gundogan latched on to Kagawa's neat back-heel before slotting home a second on 36 minutes.

The visitors spurned two good opportunities to establish a cushion, as Neven Subotic planted a header over the bar shortly after the break, before Ulreich saved well from Kagawa minutes later.

Ulreich was still proving to be the busier of both goalkeepers, and the German did well to tip away Sahin's effort on 77 minutes, but Reus was on hand to seal the win in the dying stages.

Niedermeier headed home to ensure a nervy finale to the contest, but Klopp's troops held on.
