Preview: Borussia Dortmund vs. Freiburg - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Bundesliga clash between Borussia Dortmund and Freiburg, including team news and predicted lineups.

Borussia Dortmund will be looking to put back-to-back losses behind them when they take on Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday afternoon.

BVB suffered a shock 2-0 loss at Augsburg in the league last weekend and went down 3-2 to Bayern Munich in the DFL-Supercup on Wednesday.

Freiburg are better placed in the table after the first two rounds of fixtures, sitting a point ahead of their opponents after winning one and drawing one so far.

Dortmund did well to recover from two goals down inside the opening 32 minutes of their midweek clash against Bayern, only for Joshua Kimmich to score a late winner.

It is now successive losses for Lucien Favre's men following last week's poor display at Augsburg, with Felix Uduokhai and Daniel Caligiuri netting either side of half time.

BVB may have defeated Borussia Monchengladbach 3-0 on the opening weekend, but they have lost three of their last five league matches stretching back into last season.

That is quite simply not good enough for Dortmund and questions are again being asked of head coach Favre, who really could do with all three points on home soil this weekend.

Dortmund have a very good record in this fixture, going 18 top-flight matches without defeat against Freiburg - their longest unbeaten run against any Bundesliga side.

Indeed, BVB have won 11 of their last 12 league encounters with Saturday's opponents, the only exception being a 2-2 draw in January 2018.

Christian Streich's charges will enter this contest in a positive mood, however, having taken four points from their first two matches this term.

After holding on to beat Stuttgart 3-2 on the opening weekend, Freiburg played out a 1-1 draw at home to Wolfsburg last time out to leave them fifth in the early standings.

Across their 20 Bundesliga seasons, they have only once had more points to their name at this stage, coming last season when making a perfect start.

Freiburg went on to finish eighth last time out and they will be hopeful of achieving something similar this time around, but first they must overcome their Dortmund hoodoo.

Team News

Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho pictured on September 26, 2020© Reuters

Jadon Sancho continues to be linked with a move to Manchester United and missed Dortmund's meeting with Bayern due to illness.

The England international has a combined four goals and assists in four games against Freiburg and is expected to be in contention for Saturday's game.

Marco Reus and Julian Brandt started just off Erling Braut Haaland in Sancho's absence and that will likely be the case again here should he miss out, though Giovanni Reyna is also pushing for inclusion.

Elsewhere, Roman Burki was also left out of the squad in midweek and is battling to be fit in time for this weekend's visit of Freiburg.

The visitors handed debuts to a number of players in the draw against Wolfsburg, with Baptiste Santamaria and Ermedin Demirovic among them.

Both of those players are in contention to start at the Westfalenstadion, while further up the field Nils Petersen - on target in back-to-back games - should lead the line.

Borussia Dortmund possible starting lineup:
Burki; Can, Hummels, Akanji; Meunier, Bellingham, Witsel, Guerreiro; Sancho, Reyna; Haaland

Freiburg possible starting lineup:
Muller; Schmid, Lienhart, Heintz, Gunter; Sallai, Santamaria, Hofler, Grifo; Holer, Petersen

We say: Borussia Dortmund 2-0 Freiburg

Fatigue may well be an issue for Dortmund this weekend as they play their third match in a week, whereas the visitors have had six days' rest between matches.

Freiburg enter this game in better form but they do not tend to come away from the Westfalenstadion with a positive result. That is a run we can see going on with another loss here.
