Nathan Redmond scores an 86th-minute winner as Birmingham City climb to third in the Championship with a 1-0 win over Portsmouth at St Andrews.

Nathan Redmond came off the bench to score a late winner as Birmingham City beat Portsmouth 1-0 at St Andrews tonight.

The highly-rated youngster was introduced as a second-half substitute and netted four minutes from time as the Blues climbed to third in the .

Chris Hughton's side were frustrated by the visitors and in the absence of towering striker Nicola Zigic, failed to really threaten during the first half.

Pompey were stubborn opposition and there were few chances at either end in a game which was a real midfield battle.

With the match seemingly heading for a draw, Redmond broke the deadlock in the 86th minute with a fine volley from just inside the box to snatch the points for the hosts.

Birmingham return to Championship action against Barnsley on Saturday while Portsmouth travel to Blackpool.
