New manager Danny Wilson believes in Barnsley survival

New Barnsley manager Danny Wilson says that he fully believes he can lead Barnsley to Championship survival this season.

New Barnsley manager Danny Wilson has said that he fully believes he can lead Barnsley to Championship survival this season in his second spell in charge of the club.

The 53-year-old was confirmed today as the new Tykes manager 15 years after he left Oakwell following his first managerial post.

Since then, Wilson has managed six other clubs, most recently Sheffield United, and says that being back at Barnsley offers him a "great challenge".

He told reporters today: "Things have changed all over football whichever league you're in. This is a great challenge. In recent weeks the performances here have been very good, Micky Mellon has picked the reins up very well and we've got to take it on to another level.

"You could throw a blanket over quite a lot of teams near the bottom, we've got a real challenge ahead but I genuinely believe we can get out of it."

Mellon, who led the Tykes to a win, draw and a loss in the three games he was in charge of, will now become assistant to Wilson.

Wilson's first game at the helm of rockbottom Barnsley will be a trip to in-form Yorkshire neighbours Leeds United on Saturday.
