Atletico Madrid 3-1 Besiktas

Atletico Madrid claim a convincing 3-1 win over Besiktas in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie in Spain.

Atletico Madrid have claimed a convincing 3-1 win over Besiktas in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie in Spain.

The hosts took the lead in the 24th minute when Toto Salvio wove past the Besiktas defence before he fired past Cenk Gonen.

Their lead was doubled minutes later as Salvio found the net with a neat chip.

The evening got worse for Besiktas before half time thanks to Adrian Alvarez's emphatic effort, which went in off the underside of the crossbar.

The Turkish side gave themselves some hope for the return leg after Simao found the net 10 minutes after the break with a volley against his old club.

The two sides meet in Turkey for the return leg on Thursday, March 15.
