Hector Bellerin signs new "long-term" Arsenal deal

Hector Bellerin signs a new "long-term" contract with Arsenal.

Arsenal have announced that right-back Hector Bellerin has signed a new "long-term" deal with the club.

The Spaniard, 20, broke into the Gunners' first team last season, making 28 appearances in all competitions.

Arsenal have not specified how long the new contract runs for, but his previous deal was due to expire in two years' time.

Manager Arsene Wenger suggested that Bellerin would have to compete with Mathieu Debuchy for the regular right-back role this season after taking advantage of the Frenchman's injury last term.

"I expect him to confirm all the good aspects of his game that he has shown, and to accept that he has a tough challenge with Mathieu Debuchy," Wenger told the club website.

"Mathieu is a guy who has always shown unbelievable mental strength and has top quality. He's a regular player in the French national team so Hector cannot rest. He has a big battle to face."

Bellerin joined the Gunners from Barcelona as a 16-year-old in 2011.
