Former Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas hopes that the club can keep hold of striker Robin van Persie.

Cesc Fabregas believes that Arsenal must keep hold of striker Robin van Persie.

The Dutchman, who has remained quiet over his future at the club, is happy to not enter contract negotiations until the end of the season.

By that time the 28-year-old will have one year left on his current deal.

"I don't know if they will keep him," said former Gunners captain Fabregas. "It is his decision. At his age, if he wants to move, it will be his last chance and it he wants to stay he will stay and retire at Arsenal.

"We will see what he decides but he's been very loyal to Arsenal for a few years. He is a key player, the fans love him. For me, he is the role model of Arsenal, the star player and they cannot afford to lose him."

Fabregas moved to Barcelona from Arsenal in the summer for £35m.
