Arsenal legend Emmanuel Petit slams Granit Xhaka "betrayal"

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit slams Granit Xhaka's behaviour at the weekend, labelling it a "betrayal".

Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has slammed Granit Xhaka's behaviour at the weekend, labelling it a "betrayal".

The Swiss midfielder told Gunners fans to "f*** off" and stormed down the tunnel after being subjected to a chorus of jeers and boos when he was substituted in their 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Writing for Paddy Power, the former France international was critical of Xhaka's conduct and standing as a leader in comparison to former Arsenal skippers, saying: "I have never seen something like what happened with Granit Xhaka before. For me, he can't be the Arsenal captain any longer. It's impossible, what he did was unacceptable.

"What he did on the pitch is one thing, I've made it clear that I don't know what he adds to the team.

"But what Xhaka did as he left the pitch is totally different. You can't do that - it's like betrayal in England."

While it is thought that the former Borussia Monchengladbach player still has the support of his teammates, it is expected that he will not be included in Unai Emery's squad for Arsenal's game with Liverpool in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.
