Arsenal insist that rumours of a long-term absence for midfielder Jack Wilshere are wide of the mark.

Arsenal have moved to play down fears that Jack Wilshere will miss the rest of this season with an ankle injury.

Wilshere was ruled out for at least three weeks prior to Arsenal's Champions League clash with Bayern Munich after sustaining a new problem to his ankle.

The 21-year-old has already spent more than 15 months on the sidelines through injury during his career and only returned to first-team action last October.

Despite rumours of a six-week recovery period, the Gunners have insisted that the midfielder is on target to return against Reading this month.

A club spokesperson said: "Nothing has changed in Jack's recovery, there's no setback or further damage to his ankle and no concern about any long-term problems.

"Jack was told to rest and we are still on course for him to resume training and be available for selection for the home game against Reading."

Wilshere has played 26 times in all competitions for Arsenal so far this season.
