Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: 'We can't change Jack Wilshere style'

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says that Jack Wilshere cannot adapt his style to reduce the risk of injuries without becoming less effective as a player.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has said that he will not modify Jack Wilshere's game in an effort to combat the volume of injuries that the young midfielder is afflicted with.

The 23-year-old could miss up to eight weeks of the Gunners' season after suffering the latest in a series of ankle injuries that have plagued the England international in recent years.

However, Wenger believes that Wilshere - who has started fewer than 50 Premier League games since 2011 - cannot afford to change his style without becoming less influential in the process.

"You cannot play football without going freely in the challenge," the French coach is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.

"Jack's game is to provoke with the ball at his feet and go and penetrate. You take that away, you change the player and you take one of his biggest strengths out of the game."

The North Londoners kick off their 2015-16 league campaign by hosting West Ham United at the Emirates tomorrow afternoon.
