Santos release a statement on their website admitting defeat in their pursuit of AC Milan's Robinho.

Santos have admitted defeat in their attempts to sign AC Milan playmaker Robinho.

The Brazilian side have been trying to bring the player back to his homeland since the January transfer window, but have now claimed that an agreement on wages could not be reached.

A statement on their official website read: "The club, the player and Milan tried to agree on the conditions that would make the transfer possible but, despite effort from all sides, it was not possible to meet the numbers.

"The sum of the transaction, including the payment to the Italian club and the athlete's salary remains far from the reality of Brazilian football."

Robinho spent some time on loan with Santos back in 2010 when he was a Manchester City player.
