Italy's Alice Volpi has expressed her relief at clinching the gold medal in the women's individual foil at the European Games.

The 23-year-old defeated Yana Alborova of the Russian Federation 15-11 in the final of the event in Baku to end her struggle for a gold medal.

She told reporters: "I feel tired now, but very happy. Finally I was able to win the gold after many second and third places. I've waited long for this.

"I told myself that I have to keep calm. I looked at the scores and concentrated on the next action. My favourite moment was when I made the last point in the match."

Italy have won seven gold medals at the Games.
