Russian Federation's Polina Egorova: 'I didn't expect gold medal win'

Russian Federation's Polina Egorova admits that she didn't expect to win the gold medal in the women's 200m backstroke at the European Games.

Russian Federation's Polina Egorova has revealed her delight at her surprise gold medal win in the women's 200m backstroke at the European Games.

The 15-year-old won the race in a time of 2:11.23 to break the Games record, and Egorova has admitted that she didn't expect to claim the gold medal in Baku.

She told reporters: "I'm so happy. I hadn't thought about winning and didn't really think I would, but I tried to do my best and I knew it was a really close race.

"I didn't realise straight away that I had won until I looked up at the screen and saw that I had."

The Russian Federation have won 51 gold medals at the European Games.
