Jack Laugher through, Chris Mears out in World Championships 3m semi-final

Great Britain's world number one Jack Laugher advances to the final of the men's 3m springboard event at the 16th FINA World Championships in Kazan.

British medal hope Jack Laugher safely booked his place in the men's 3m springboard final at the 16th FINA World Championships, but his synchro partner Chris Mears did not make it through today's semi.

Laugher, the world number one at 3m, was not at his best in this morning's preliminaries and again fell short of the pacesetters in the semi-final, where 18 are cut to 12 for tomorrow's final.

The Leeds-based diver posted a score of 490.90 from his six dives for the fifth-best score, with China's Cao Yuan recording the highest total, 50 points better than Laugher.

Mears and Laugher won Britain's first medal in Kazan with bronze in the 3m synchro, but Mears could not join his teammate in the final after scraping into the semi this morning.

He was well in contention after the early rounds, but dropped to 15th by the end to miss out on the final.
