Tom Daley fails to qualify in China

Tom Daley fails to make it to the final of the 10m event in China after his new dive earns a disastrous score.

Tom Daley has failed to progress to the final of the men's 10m platform event at the Beijing meet of the World Diving Series.

The 20-year-old had been expected to be in contention for a podium spot in China, but failed to qualify for the six-men final after finishing fourth in his preliminary earlier in the day.

Daley found himself bottom of the pile by the end of the second round as his new dive, the forward 3-1/2 somersault 1 twist pike, earned him a score of just 54.00.

The Commonwealth champion rallied in his remaining four dives, hitting a 97.20 in the process, but was unable to recover the deficit and finished fourth overall in his heat.

China's Qiu Bo is expected to take gold at the competition's final event later today.
