The Plymouth-born athlete led from the very first dive, executing his armstand back triple somersault with a score of 94.50.

Meanwhile Australia's Matthew Mitcham, Daley's biggest rival in the event, recorded a poor forward 3.5 somersault to put him on the back foot early on.

Up next was the 'demon dive', a routine which Daley had failed in the morning. The back 2.5 somersault, 2.5 twists routine led to a score of 64.80.

His inward 3.5 somersault for his third dive gained a score of 81.60, keeping him well ahead at the halfway mark.

Daley's score of 79.55 in the forward 4.5 somersault kept him in front of Canada's Vincent Riendeau and Malaysia's Tze Liang.

A superb back 3.5 somersault for his fifth dive earnt him a score of 102.60, ensuring that his lead was so great that he had secured third place before his final routine.

Daley duly carried this formality out flawlessly to seal the gold for the second Games running.
