Michael van Gerwen sets up a last-16 tie with Phil Taylor on a night where James Wade and Simon Whitlock are eliminated from the Grand Slam of Darts.

Michael van Gerwen will play Phil Taylor in the Grand Slam of Darts last 16 after beating Ted Hankey to top Group B at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall event.

The Dutchman whitewashed an off-colour Hankey, who had problems with the vision in his left eye throughout the match, to set up a mouthwatering contest with Taylor in the next round.

The 15-time world champion only finished runner-up in Group A after surprisingly losing 5-2 to 2010 Grand Slam winner Scott Waites.

Simon Whitlock and James Wade were among the big names to exit at the first stage after they lost to Dean Winstanley and Mervyn King, both of whom qualified with victories.

Co Stompe finished bottom of his pool despite triumphing 5-2 over former BDO world champion Mark Webster, who also failed to advance to the knockout stages.

In arguably the match of the night, Robert Thornton booked his ticket to the last 16 by edging out Steve Beaton 5-4 in a high-scoring affair.

Kevin Painter defeated winless youngster James Hubbard to progress alongside Winstanley from Group D, while Arron Monk also qualified with an impressive 5-1 win over Jan Dekker.
