Mark Cavendish: 'I felt like Rooney in defence'

Mark Cavendish admits that he has found it difficult to sacrifice his individual goals for the good of Team Sky during the Tour de France.

Mark Cavendish has admitted that he is finding it difficult to sacrifice his individual goals for the good of Team Sky during the Tour de France.

The team's tactics have revolved around supporting Bradley Wiggins's victory bid - a strategy which Cavendish admits feels unnatural to him.

"It's like putting Wayne Rooney in defence," he told BBC Sport. "You can still win the match but you can't do your part of that to the best of your ability.

"I'm part of a team but I'm not doing what I can do as an individual rider."

Cavendish clinched victory in stage 18 of the Tour earlier today, but Wiggins maintained his overall lead and is on course to become the first British man to win the race.
