Alejandro Valverde wins stage 17 of the Tour de France, while Bradley Wiggins retains the yellow jersey after finishing third behind Team Sky teammate Chris Froome.

Spain's Alejandro Valverde has won stage 17 of the Tour de France, while Team Sky's Bradley Wiggins retains the yellow jersey ahead of Sunday's final day of the race.

Wiggins came third in today's race from Bagneres de Luchon to Peyragudes, just seconds behind his teammate Chris Froome, allowing the Brit to extend his overall lead by 18 seconds.

There was slight trouble for Team Sky in the early stages of the race when Mark Cavendish crashed but continued unscathed alongside teammate Richie Porte.

Wiggins, who is relatively unchallenged heading into Sunday's final day, will become the first British cyclist to win the Tour de France if he ends victorious.
