South Africa have named Alviro Petersen as Graeme Smith's replacement for next month's ICC Champions Trophy in England.
Proteas Test captain Smith will undergo surgery on his injured left ankle and will consequently miss the 50-over tournament, which starts on June 6.
It is a like-for-like swap at the top of the order as Petersen is Smith's regular opening partner in the longer form of the game.
The 32-year-old has not played a one-day international since January 2012, but will be accustomed to the English conditions courtesy of his time with Glamorgan and Somerset, for whom he is currently playing.
Petersen has made 17 ODI appearances for South Africa and averages 31.21 in 15 innings.
