However, Dale Steyn struck at the end of the first over, when Hashim Amla caught Guptill out for a duck.
New Zealand looked to be heading to the end of the session with just one wicket down, but with five minutes left until tea, Jacques Kallis dismissed Kane Williamson for 15 to leave the tourists on 33-2.
