The visitors faced a tough task following their dismal first innings, which ended with the Black Caps getting all out for 45 and chasing a lead of 302 when South Africa declared.

New Zealand closed yesterday on 169-4 and have since extended their lead with Brownlie, who clinched his first Test century, and BJ Watling racking up a combined 140 until Brownlie was dismissed on 109 by Robin Petersen.

South Africa's bowlers have struggled to maintain their dominance but they will be determined to pick up more wickets in the afternoon session in order to keep their stronghold on the first Test.

New Zealand headed into lunch on 232-5.
