Joe Root and Alastair Cook both completed half-centuries in the morning session on day four of the first Test against New Zealand as England reached 175-3 at lunch, a lead of 41 runs.
England resumed on 74-2, still 60 behind the tourists' first-innings total, and it did not take long for the Black Caps to make an impact, sending Ian Bell back to the pavilion with just the third ball of the day with a Tim Southee delivery.
Cook continued to patiently add to his total after being joined by Root at the crease, bringing up his half-century midway through the session.
The captain hit a couple of boundaries off a Mark Craig over to put England ahead, while Root started to hit his stride, bringing up his 50 off just 83 balls.
The two batsmen brought up their 100-run partnership just before the interval, while Root survived an appeal off Trent Boult's bowling in the final over before lunch.
