Australia captain Michael Clarke has dismissed claims that he overstepped the mark when sledging England's James Anderson on day four of the first Ashes Test match at The Gabba.

The 32-year-old was heard on a stump microphone telling the Lancashire fast bowler to "get ready for a broken fucking arm" as he prepared to face an over from Mitchell Johnson.

The home side were looking for the final wicket to close out a 381-run victory and take a 1-0 series lead.

"There is always banter on the field, especially between Australia and England, they are two teams who always play hard, tough cricket on the field," ABC quotes Clarke as saying.

"I still believe there is a very good mutual respect off the field. I can only talk from the Australian team. I have the utmost respect for their team."

Clarke said before the series that he was unsure whether Anderson liked him or not.
