Michael Clarke hails "fantastic team performance"

After helping his side beat England by 381 runs, Australia captain Michael Clarke hails his team's display during the first Ashes Test.

Australia captain Michael Clarke has hailed his side's display during the first Ashes Test as a "fantastic team performance".

The hosts took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series by beating England by 381 runs at The Gabba.

Clarke told BBC Sport: "It's a proud and happy moment. We've worked hard, that started before the Ashes in England.

"The fact that we played with good intent, had plans and stuck to them made it a fantastic team performance."

Mitchell Johnson was named as Man of the Match after producing knocks of 64 and 39* with the bat and taking nine wickets for 103 runs.

Johnson had not played a Test Match since March, but Clarke said that the 32-year-old's excellent showing did not surprise him.

Clarke added: "I said at the start of the series that if Mitchell Johnson performs the way he can, he'll be Man of the Series."

Australia have not lost a Test match at The Gabba since 1988.
