Hosts Bangladesh slumped to a 73-run defeat to the West Indies in their Twenty20 World Cup Super Eight encounter at the Shere Bangla National Stadium this afternoon.
The home side won the toss and elected to field first, but early on it became apparent that it was the wrong decision.
West Indies openers Dwayne Smith and Chris Gayle made 72 and 48 runs respectively as the holders took control of the contest.
Four further West Indian batsmen, including Lendl Simmons, were removed for ducks, but an unbeaten knock of 18 from captain Darren Sammy helped his side to post a total of 171-7 from their allotted 20 overs.
In reply, Bangladesh struggled to form any meaningful partnerships as they lost wickets at regular intervals.
Mushfiqur Rahim top-scored with a contribution of 22 runs from as many deliveries, but they ended up falling well short of their victory target with a score of 98 all out, thanks largely to the bowling of Samuel Badree, who claimed four wickets at an economy of 3.75.
